I’m always a little perplexed when I hear someone say they’re not a creative person. Creativity is our very essence! It is creative energy that created your very heartbeat and it is the bedrock of all new ideas, thoughts and beginnings. It flows directly from source, a well that is richly abundant, always ready to flow in our direction.
What I really think is that those people who think they aren’t creative are really saying, "I had a creative idea once, tried to execute it and it didn’t go as planned so I’ve given up the idea of ever trying my hand at creative activity."
There is such richness in the process of creative flow.
Cofounder of positive psychology, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced: Me high. Cheeks send me high!), is most widely known for his research on flow. All of his extensive study led him to conclude that happiness resides on the inside as a state of being and that our levels of happiness can be shifted by introducing more flow experiences into our lives.
Flow can be expressed as a state of one-pointedness where the action and awareness of the action begin to merge. This can easily be witnessed in musicians, athletes and artists. It can also be seen in yogis focusing intently on a posture. One-pointedness is known as dharana (concentration) in yoga.
For me, art and creative activity creates this flow experience and takes me to a place of total zen. Tapping into the creative source field is like plugging your life cord into the outlet of divine intelligence. This connection between self and source offers nourishment and healing on so many levels. It is so moving for me that I have created a workshop so that others may come and experience a state of creative flow in the context of deeper self-study, known among the eight limbs of yoga as svadhyaya.
